The Union finance minister has finally approved the cadre restructuring
in the central board of excise and customs (CBEC). The cadre
restructuring was in the pipeline for seven years. With the approval,
over 18,000 new posts are expected to be created in the department
across the country.
In Gujarat, four new commissionerates are likely to be added in the Ahmedabad zone. Presently there are 10 commisionerates of central excise, one of service tax and three commissionerates of appeals in Ahmedabad and Vadodara zones.
According to sources, the new commissionerates are expected to be three of audit, one each with Ahmedabad I, II and III commissionerates and a new central excise commissioner in Kutch. At present, Kutch comes under the Jamnagar commissionerate. Meanwhile, no new commissionerates are likely to be added in the service tax or customs in Gujarat. The Ahmedabad zone covers all of north and central Gujarat and Saurashtra.
